Calcifications of Pure Mucinous Breast Carcinoma: Mammographic Findings

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: The purose of this study was to evaluate the frequency and shape of calcifications of the pure mucinous breast carcinoma on mammography.
Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the mammography of 120 women who had pure mucinous carcinoma diagnosed after definite surgery between August 2005 and December 2010. Two radiologists, who had information about the mucinous breast carcinoma, retrospectively reviewed the mammography. To describe the shape of mammographic calcifications, we used the terminology of the Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System developed by the American College of Radiology: linear branching, fine pleomorphic, coarse heterogeneous, amorphous, round or punctate. We analyzed the frequency of calcifications of the pure mucinous breast carcinoma, and incidence of the shape of mammographic calcifications respectively.
Results: Forty-four patients (37%) of 120 pure mucinous breast carcinoma showed microcalcifications on mammography. Of these, thirty-eight cases (32%) showed intratumoral microcalcifications, eighteen cases (15%) showed calcifications both within and out of the masses, and 6 cases (5%) showed calcifications out of the masses only. The shape of intratumoral calcifications included linear branching calcifications in one, fine pleomorphic carcifications in fifteen, coarse heterogeneous calcifications in two, amorphous calcifications in six, and round or punctate calcifications in fourteen.
Conclusion: Thirty-eight (32%) of 120 pure mucinous breast carcinoma showed intratumoral microcalcifications. On mammography, pure mucinous breast carcinoma was most commonly seen as fine pleomorphic, round or punctate calcifications within the mass.
